Savannah LGBT Film Series and Festival in the Works
by Deb Riney

So ok, coming from California’s Bay Area I may be a bit spoiled by easy access to LGBT film screenings, and especially by my past annual attendance to the San Francisco Film Festivals. The SF International LGBT Frameline Film Festival is the longest running, largest and most widely recognized LGBT film exhibition in the world.  The thought of Savannah having an LGBT Film Festival has been gently on my mind for a while and I am happy to announce that it now will become a reality.

In April I met with Frameline’s 25 year experienced Artistic Director who has helped others develop film festivals in their communities with his sharing of expertise. Upon his recommendation I attended 9 days of their just completed Film Festival. In those 9 days I saw 46 screenings of feature movies, documentaries and shorts. I met with the President of Frameline and numerous Board Members; Independent Filmmakers; Producers; Directors; Distributors; other Film Festival Directors; with potential corporate sponsors; and many other wonderful helpful and insightful people.

The vision and plan for Savannah is to organize and manage a year round program with an annual film festival that will serve the educational and cultural audience needs of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community.

A Film Committee has been formed within First City Network. A diverse array of shorts, documentaries, independent and feature films are being planned- films that will celebrate a worldly view of today’s gay and lesbian life. We hope to bring the community together in featuring entertaining and sophisticated films while building a vibrant film festival community here in Savannah.

The inauguration of the Film Series will be during Pride weekend, on Sunday, September 21st. More will follow on the location, time, and films for this inaugural event. The next Series Film is planned for October with others to follow every two to three months with a multi-day First Annual Film Festival in the summer of 2009.

My vision and that of First City Network for having a Film Series and Festival is to provide opportunities for viewing media by LGBT people and their experiences; to strengthen our diverse LGBT community; and to further our visibility by promoting and supporting artistic expression in film, video and other media arts.

We sincerely hope that you will share this vision and ensure its success by attending the LGBT Films and the Festival next summer. Your support will be key in the BIG picture!
