DON'T MISS
SGLFS Special Valentines Evening

by Deb Riney

GENERAL TICKETS ON SALE HERE JAN 29

SGLFS CHARTER MEMBERS Get tickets NOW for The Savannah Gay & Lesbian Film Society’s Sunday, February 14th screenings of “EDIE & THEA: A Very Long Engagement” and “CHRIS & DON: A Love Story”. Our specially selected Valentine Day feature films are based on long-term relationships that remind us to embrace who we are and what we have to make the most of life.  AND this special Valentine-oriented evening will include more than our films! We will be honoring 20+ year long-term relationships within our own LGBT community with special recognitions that evening.

Both of our feature screenings will start off with an independent short film entitled “Back To Life” by New York Latina filmmaker and actress Desi del Valle who will be in Savannah to personally present her impressive film with it’s moving script based upon the death of a girlfriend and the comforting shoulder of a straight gal-pal that turns into more. It is a gentle story of love between friends. Desi is a talented actress, screen writer, director, and she is one of our community’s rising star independent filmmakers who I happily met during last June’s Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco.  Don’t miss your opportunity to meet Desi here and participate in the Q&A following our Valentine’s Day screenings.

Our features start off with an International award-winning film, “Edie & Thea”, the true tale of two stunning, smart, vivacious women, whose endearing love story unfolds amid the historical backdrop of the Stonewall riots in the 1960’s and continues over 43 years. With a commitment to living life fully wherever it takes them, in work, in love and in activism, they also face the challenges of aging together. Even with their challenges, these insightful and vibrant women never lose their humor and remain loyal dance partners. Their long-term engagement in life is a model of courage and strength that speaks to everyone, of any age. They are standard bearers for loving, affirming relationships everywhere.

Our second feature film, “Chris & Don”, is the true-life story of a passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories was the basis for all incarnations of the much-beloved “Cabaret”) and American portrait painter Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. Their against-all-odds saga is brought to dazzling life by a treasure trove of multimedia. Bachardy’s contemporary reminiscences in the Santa Monica home he shared with Isherwood until his death in 1986 artfully interact with archival footage of rare home movies with glimpses of glitterati pals W.H. Auden, Igor Stravinsky, Tennessee Williams, Leslie Caron, John Boorman, and even Miss Liza herself. It’s a brilliant film blending artistic elements along with a jazzy original soundtrack.

BONUS!  To express the Film Society’s love for your support on Valentine’s Day, SGLFS has arranged for a private reception at Savannah’s newest happening place, Sugar Daddy’s, 109 Jefferson Street, which is a short walk/drive from the Jepson. The gratis private reception will follow the Chris & Don screening, from approximately 10:30 pm to midnight. Reception passes will be distributed to film patrons that evening and required for private reception admission. Sugar Daddy’s will prepare some of their fabulous gourmet appetizers and decadent desserts.  It’s going to be a yummy evening from start to finish! So, get your tickets NOW to attend one or both screenings and plan to attend our special SGLFS Valentines Reception at Sugar Daddy’s!

Our programs will screen at Telfair’s Jepson Center for the Arts beginning at 6:30 pm for “EDIE & THEA” and 8:00 pm for “CHRIS & DON”. The Jepson is located at 207 West York Street. Tickets are $10.00 per program and available RIGHT HERE via PayPal. Tickets are also at TailsSpin, 4501 Habersham, at Home Run Video, 4 E. Liberty Street; and pending availability, will be at the Jepson Box Office on February 14th at screening times.

And, back by popular demand, you can surprise your sweetheart with a Screen Valentine on the big screen. Screen Valentines will appear prior to the evening’s film programs. Hearts with text only are $10; and hearts with text and a photo $15. They make a sweet surprise for that someone special sitting next to you. Go to the SGLFS website for more information and an Order Form. Pay via PayPal at firstcitynetwork.net, or go to TailsSpin, 4501 Habersham. Deadline to receive paid Order Forms is February 12th.
